Porsche 918 Spyder – The hybrid at its best

Mercedes-Benz has a supercar, McLaren has a supercar and Porsche has joined the club with the mighty 918 Spyder. With a starting price of about 800.000 Euros, the car was already sold out.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is the Carrera GT successor or this is what we want to believe and when I say we I am referring to all the petrol heads in the world. Carrera GT was a real “widow maker” and the 918 Spyder will take its place. But don’t worry, this was said in a good way.

I had the chance to see this impressive car in “flesh and bones” at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, but it hasn’t been easy. After I talked to a pretty lady, a poker face guy come to me, ask for a journalist badge and then we enter into a secret room. Here, the Porsche 918 Spyder was kept in perfect weather conditions: low humidity and constant temperature.

Yes, the car is impressive. All those carbon fiber body panels, the massive engine at the pack and those “puppy” eyes. It was love at the first sight. But enough with my experience. Let’s talk a little about this impressive machine.

Under the hood is an incredible hybrid powertrain that integrates a V8 4.6 liter engine with 580 horsepower and more than 500 Nm peak of torque. The combustion engine powers the rear wheel with some help from an electric motor while a second electric unit will spin the front wheels. According to Porsche, the electric motors have a combined output of 245 horsepower (116 front and 129 rear).

The engine resources are sent to the ground via a 7 speed PDK transmission that has Electric Porsche Traction Management, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, auto stop/start and a “Sailing” fuel-economy mode. In addition, the German hypercar comes with five modes: E-Power, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid, Race Hybrid and Hot Lap.

Hope we managed to get your attention because we have prepared a few videos with the Porsche 918 Spyder.
